Jeanne Purcell

Jeanne H. Purcell, Ph.D., completed her B.A. at the University of Hartford in British literature, and 2 years later she finished a master’s degree in urban education. In 1993 she completed a Ph.D. in educational psychology at the University of Connecticut. Jeanne began teaching in 1973 at the secondary level in Hartford, CT. Over her career of 40 years, she taught in urban, rural, and suburban districts. She completed her formal career in 2009 at the Connecticut State Department of Education, where, for a decade, she provided leadership for gifted and talented education initiatives. Jeanne has fond memories of art classes and teachers who allowed students to study and complete a landscape of choice, along with a similar opportunity to study and complete a still life of choice. Jeanne recalls that, at the time, these opportunities seemed so liberating. She learned early about the power of choice and the opportunity to direct her own learning. And from that time forward, she deeply appreciated any choices that were afforded her in a formal schooling situation.
