Bonnie L. Risby

Bonnie Lou Risby grew up in the Illinois woodlands atop the limestone bluffs across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. These woods were her playground where she and her siblings camped out, played detective, scout, hunter, etc. and enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors in every season. After getting bachelor’s and master’s degrees in foreign languages, English, and counseling she taught at the high school, middle school, and elementary school level. When Bonnie helped write the grant establishing Columbia, IL’s gifted program in the early 1970s, there were few materials readily available that were a good fit for her critical thinking skills gifted classes. To supplement, Bonnie started creating grid logic problems individualized to feature her own students.

After the birth of her son, Bonnie retired from teaching and joined a counseling practice in St. Louis County specializing in family and couples therapy. Meanwhile she continued to create logic and deductive reasoning books in her spare moments.

Bonnie now works in a family business with her husband. Her office is in her home in Ballwin, MO, where she and her faithful pug dog, Francy, can be found most days. Bonnie continues to be an advocate for both gifted youngsters, producing classroom books, chapter books, poetry, magazine articles, and novels for young adults. “Writing is my pleasure rather than my career.” In recent years, her freelance articles have ranged from parenting issues to cooking to humor. Besides writing, Bonnie loves float trips down Ozark streams, biking, horse racing, long walks with Francy, gardening, family history, and travel.
