AUSTIN, Texas—Prufrock Press’s Genius Hour: Passion Projects That Ignite Innovation and Student Inquiry has received a prestigious 2019 Teachers’ Choice Award. The book, by Andi McNair, provides educators with the tools that they need to successfully implement passion projects in the classroom.

The Teachers’ Choice Awards honor products of exceptional quality and outstanding performance in the classroom and at home. The Professional Development category recognizes useful tools that help educators “up their professional development game.”

Genius Hour, presented through an easy-to-follow six-step strategy, helps teachers utilize the six P’s—passion, plan, pitch, project, product, and presentation—as a map for students to follow as they create, design, and carry out products. These self-driven projects allow students to experience personalized learning, practice the application of standards and real-world skills, and learn through failure and reflection. The book includes handouts, suggested online resources, and tips and tricks to make the Genius Hour process meaningful for students and manageable for educators, as well as a discussion of Genius Hour’s importance and impact on gifted students as they take ownership of their own learning.
