This manual contains specific instructions for using the SIGS-2.

Scales for Identifying Gifted Students–Second Edition (SIGS-2) offers the most comprehensive observational instrument available for identifying gifted students grades K–12. Used as part of a comprehensive process for identifying gifted children, SIGS-2 offers schools an instrument with extensive statistical and research support. This standardized, norm-referenced instrument is completed by teachers or parents and provides an effective method for identifying gifted children.

The SIGS-2 explicitly builds on the successful tradition of the SIGS. The theoretical framework of the SIGS-2 is unchanged, and the basic processes of the Home Rating Scales and School Rating Scales are unchanged. There were three goals driving the new edition: (1) maintain the qualities of the SIGS that made it one of the top behavioral rating scales in the world for gifted and talented education, (2) provide expanded and updated national norms, and (3) reevaluate the measurement model to provide SIGS-2 users with a structurally valid and reliable measurement tool.

SIGS-2 consists of two rating scales that can be used together or independently (a Home Rating Scale and a School Rating Scale). Additionally a Spanish-language version of the Home Rating Scale is included free with the kit. The SIGS-2 is composed of seven scales: (1) general intellectual ability; (2) language arts; (3) mathematics; (4) science; (5) social studies; (6) creativity; and (7) leadership.

Each scale contains 10 items that are rated using a Likert-type scale. The items were chosen from a comprehensive body of research concerning the characteristics of gifted students.

SIGS-2 was normed on a total sample of more than 200,000 completed scales. The total sample of completed scales (n = 254,743) include both School Rating Scales (n = 235,369) and Home Rating Scales (n = 19,374). The sample was representative of all four regions of the United States and included ratings of students diversified by ethnicity, race, and sex. As such, SIGS-2 offers schools an observational scale with the largest, most diverse norming sample and statistical support of any gifted identification observational instrument available.

The potential bias of every item on the test on the basis of gender and ethnic group was studied. Only nonbiased items are included in the SIGS-2. Thus, schools using the SIGS-2 can be assured that the instrument has no gender or ethnic group bias. The internal consistency of the SIGS-2 is high, with all coefficients at .84 or above. Validity of the instrument has been established with its correlations to other standardized measures.

Because the SIGS-2 offers the most advanced and comprehensive statistical support of any observational identification instrument in the field, it should be a part of every school's comprehensive approach to identifying gifted children.
