With the recent release of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which contained several changes to autism spectrum classifications, now is a particularly pertinent time to our examine our understanding of life on the spectrum. The new PBS documentary Neurotypicalwhich explores autism spectrum disorders from the point of view of those affected by them, has provoked thoughtful discussion of the meaning of the broad label, including the provocative Salon.com article written by the parent of a child with high-functioning autism, “Are any of us really ‘neurotypical’?” The 52-minute film is available for free viewing on the “POV” website until August 29. You can also view two other recent autism documentaries that are creating a stir, The United States of Autism and Wretches and Jabberers.
