Inspiring Contests for Talented and Creative Students

Do you know a talented student who is looking for a challenge? There are thousands of contests and opportunities out there for awards, scholarships, and more. Ranging from creative expression to researching and implementing scientific ideas, these competitions are great ways for kids to explore their passions.

Google Science Fair

  • What: Find a problem to solve, explore solutions through testing, and present findings.

  • Age: 13–18 year olds. Can be completed in groups or individually.

  • Deadlines: Submissions close on December 12, 2018.

  • Prizes: Scholarships, travel opportunities, and other products.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

  • What: Recognizing creative student achievement in art and writing. Note: Students must create an account before seeing what scholarships and awards they can apply for, as it varies by region.

  • Age: Grades 7–12, must be 13+ years old.

  • Deadlines: Personalized based on a student’s grade and the categories he or she is applying for, but they tend to be in late November/early December.

  • Prizes: Scholarships and recognition.

NASA Student Competitions

  • What: A variety of opportunities, including art, essay, and video contests, as well as chances to present ideas and research in the field of space exploration.

  • Age: Each competition’s requirements differ, but there are opportunities for each age group.

  • Deadlines: Deadlines differ for each competition, but range from October to January.

  • Prizes: Internships, scholarships, and more.

Toyota Dream Car Art Contest

  • What: Students hand-draw their dream car and a background for the chance at a trip to Japan. Judged on expressiveness, uniqueness, and artistry.
  • Age: 4–15 years.
  • Deadlines: Submission period closes on January 31, 2019.
  • Prizes: Grand prize trip to Japan, and work featured on Toyota website.  

Google Code-in

  • What: Open source organizations create tasks for students to work on. Good for beginners to coding.
  • Age: 13–17 years.
  • Deadlines: Register and start claiming tasks on October 23, 2018. Contest ends December 12, 2018.
  • Prizes: Digital certificates, shirts, hoodies, and trips to Google Headquarters in California.

Other competitions to consider that haven’t opened for submissions yet:

Doodle 4 Google

  • What: Students create a doodle containing “Google” that shows what inspires them. Judged on creativity, artistic skill, and adherence to theme.
  • Age: Grades K–12, judged in five different age groups.
  • Deadlines: 2019 period not announced yet, but usually opens in January and closes in March.
  • Prizes: Scholarships, technology packages, Google merchandise, travel opportunities, and chance for the student’s doodle to be displayed in an online gallery.  

National Geographic Student Expeditions Photo Contest

  • What: Submit up to five photos and descriptions, to be judged on creativity, quality, composition, and theme.
  • Age: Grades 7–12, must be 13+ years old.
  • Deadlines: Typically closes at the end of January.
  • Prizes: Photos featured on National Geographic website, and one grand prize winner gets a spot on a Student Expeditions photography trip of his or her choice.
