The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics are curriculum standards that describe the mathematics skills and concepts students need to develop for success in higher education and the 21st-century workplace. This book from the Center for Gifted Education provides gifted and advanced learners challenging activities to master and engage with the CCSS for mathematics. The lessons cover mathematics content for grade 6, including ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability. Activities and practice problems enrich and extend current grade-level mathematics content. Each lesson follows a predictable structure and includes a teacher page that outlines the CCSS and mathematical practices covered, estimated time, key terms, materials, and objectives; a challenging activity to allow students to explore the concepts in depth; practice problems; and an assessment similar to CCSS-based grade-level standardized assessments.

Outstanding for diverse extension activities!
As a current National Board Certified teacher, I was asked to review this particular title. The sequencing of the lessons uses sound pedagogical methods including anticipatory hooks; extensive practice with open-ended, multi-level questioning; common core assessment practice; and discussion and extension based on a student’s inquiry and findings. It is a very practical guide for any teacher needing a quick, efficient reference. Moreover, the range and variety of engaging activities offered is outstanding. While some tactile lessons are recreationally inspired (Taboo, Fantasy Football, and Chess), others are equipped for cross-curricular collaboration such as trading in an ancient bazaar, using the scientific method, analyzing narrative poetry, and plotting novel settings. Furthermore, there are multiple opportunities for students to develop meaningful logical, data-supported argumentative writing. I highly recommend this book as a well-developed resource for math enrichment.

I highly recommend this book for teachers and students. Gifted students and advanced learners will find that the varied activities will extend their thinking. The activities will also be challenging but enjoyable. In short, the activities will provide enrichment and extend the grade-level mathematics content rather than accelerate students to the next grade level.

[T]his book offers plenty of ideas for thought-provoking explorations of math topics that could benefit all students, not just those deemed gifted or advanced.

Review: Mindprint Learning - March 24, 2016

All the lessons involve applying learned content to word problems with real world themes, such as fantasy football, creating healthy food plans, and chess. Most lessons use hands-on visual materials to first understand and apply math concepts, followed by short answer questions and multiple choice answer sheets . . . the activities in this workbook provide good, hands-on enrichment after the teacher has taught the particular content standard, and teachers can pick and choose what activities to use to engage a particular group of students based on topic, skill level, and interest..
