Michael S. Matthews, Ph.D.

Michael S. Matthews, Ph.D., is associate professor and graduate program coordinator for academically/intellectually gifted in the Department of Special Education and Child Development at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Matthews held academic positions with the Duke University Talent Identification Program and the University of South Florida before moving to the faculty at UNC Charlotte in 2008. Dr. Matthews is a former laboratory chemist and high school chemistry teacher who also has worked in a variety of summer program settings teaching science topics to students in grades 2–10. He is a board member of the North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented and a former board member of the Florida Association for the Gifted, as well as an active member of the Research & Evaluation Network of the National Association for Gifted Children and the Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent special interest group of the American Educational Research Association. He has written two other books with Prufrock Press, as well as more than 15 peer-reviewed journal articles and a variety of book chapters and other publications related to gifted and high-ability learners. He is coeditor of the Journal of Advanced Academics, and serves as an editorial review board member for three other gifted education journals. Dr. Matthews' research interests include content learning in science, mathematics, and second language acquisition; gifted education policy; the assessment and identification of learners from diverse backgrounds; and motivation and underachievement among gifted and high-ability learners. In his spare time, he enjoys teaching his children about nature and the history of technology.
