Teachers often have too little time to prepare differentiated lessons to meet the needs of all students. Differentiating Instruction in Algebra 1 provides ready-to-use resources for Algebra 1 students. The book is divided into four units: introduction to functions and relationships; systems of linear equations; exponent rules and exponential functions; and quadratic functions. Each unit includes big ideas, essential questions, the Common Core State Standards addressed within that section, pretests, learning targets, varied activities, and answer keys. The activities offer choices to students or three levels of practice based on student skill level. Differentiating Instruction in Algebra 1 is just the resource math teachers need to provide exciting and challenging algebra activities for all students!

Review by: Tim Kubinak, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) - October 1, 2013
Jurek excels in providing students with many opportunities to engage in vocabulary development and comprehension and to apply primary algebraic concepts. The use of detailed rubrics to guide student self-evaluation is an excellent way to promote responsibility in higher-level mathematics students, and the inclusion of "learning targets" gives those students who need additional structure the opportunity to show growth and establish a positive learning routine. With its variety of opportunities for facilitating and demonstrating algebra mastery, Jurek's book will give teachers of varying experience a storehouse of unique, varied activities to engage algebra students through a wide breadth of content. Combined with thoughtful, quality algebra instruction, this work can have a significant impact on algebra mastery.

A must have resource for Algebra teachers
As a junior high math teacher I can say that this is the best resource I have seen for differentiated instruction. The layout of each unit is very thorough. The author outlines each unit with critical vocabulary, unit objectives, launch scenarios, and differentiated lessons and activities. By giving students choices for each lesson, students gain a sense of control over their learning. The activities are engaging and require a lot of mathematical thinking. This book is a must have for every Algebra teacher!

Easy to use and Engaging for students
As a Special Education Math teacher for the past 10 years, I found Differentiating Instruction in Algebra 1 extremely practical and applicable for students and teachers. The book is laid out in an easy to use manner that any Math educator will find useful. The worksheets, activities and hands on projects are all clearly explained and come with rubrics for easy grading. Additionally, there is a system that allows the teacher to quickly select the appropriate worksheet/activity/activity for the student. Of course the educator view point is important but the most important part of any lesson or educational activity is how students will react. This book has a wonderful variety of activities and lessons that will connect to all learners. The information and activities provide students a connection from math in school to real life. The author provides high interest materials that will engage students. The author has clearly thought about the student engagement aspect as she wrote this book.
