Creative Curriculum Extenders: Differentiated Projects for the Language Arts Classroom is an easy-to-use source of reading and writing curriculum projects that tie to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and help teachers differentiate instruction. Each page has four in-depth, open-ended, and varied project choices, allowing students to pick a project that fits their needs, ability level, and learning style. Some of the categories that the projects cover are narrative, descriptive, persuasive and expository communications, poetry, novels, nonfiction, and more. Each page is graphically interesting and perfect to post on a bulletin board or in a learning center for extensions, enrichment or extra credit choices.

Creative Curriculum Extenders
Although for grades 3 - 5, I could easily use this in a high school classroom with very little adaptation. The permission to photocopy for classroom use is wonderful because it is one of the rare teacher books that are truly ready-to-use in current form because the layout is so good, with great fonts and engaging but simple graphics.

A number of the tasks would make great journal prompts if used in isolation, so there is a lot of flexibility with the material. The book privileges creativity (the title is a hint), and it includes a helpful creativity rubric. The ideas could be used for projects, assessments, centers, or great conversation starters. The idea of choice is emphasized, with appropriate tasks for all learner interests.

It covers many kinds of text (from autobiography to fairy tales), so the teacher who is using the Common Core State Standards will find appropriate resources for approaching a variety of texts.
