Supporting Teachers and Parents for 20 Years and Counting
In 1989, Joel McIntosh, publisher of Prufrock Press, had an idea: Why not take the best ideas teachers have to offer and compile them into one resource, a journal, of teaching strategies geared to gifted and advanced learners? And thus, the Prufrock Journal (which later became The Journal of Secondary Gifted Education) was born. When McIntosh began publishing books that included engaging, high-quality materials for classroom teachers, his idea bloomed into Prufrock Press Inc. Some of the highlights from the company's history include:
- 1993: Prufrock acquires Gifted Child Today and Creative Kids magazine.
- 2000: Prufrock launches its textbook division.
- 2005: Prufrock starts its trade division, with books for parents and teachers being distributed to bookstores nationwide by Sourcebooks Inc.
- 2007: Prufrock launches its special needs division.
- 2009: Prufrock named one of Publishers Weekly's Small Publisher Standouts, the publication's list of the fastest-growing independent presses across the nation.
- 2010: Prufrock begins offering its books in epub format.
- 2011: Prufrock creates and releases its first iPad app, Math Dictionary for Kids
In 1989, McIntosh saw the need for high-quality materials firsthand as an English teacher who was constantly looking for engaging classroom activities. As a publisher, Prufrock Press has fulfilled that need—and those of teachers and parents across the nation—for more than 20 years and counting.
